Tiger Woods Covers Vanity Fair Magazine

Here’s Tiger Woods latest controversial magazine cover for Vanity Fair.

Via DailyNews:

Showing off his guns and abs and glaring at the camera, Tiger Woods looks nothing like the good guy of the greens in this Annie Leibovitz photo on the cover of Vanity Fair.

The menacing shot – never before seen – was taken in January 2006, long before the world learned the married father of two cheated on his wife with a harem of hotties.

“Tiger is an intensely competitive athlete – and quite serious about his sport,” Leibovitz said. “I wanted to reveal that in these photos. And to show his incredible focus and dedication.”

In the accompanying article, Woods, 34, comes off just as dedicated to keeping reporters at bay.

Buzz Bissinger, who interviewed some of the scribes who covered Woods for years, recounts how the golfer embarrassed himself in an interview with Charles Pierce of GQ in 1997 – when he was a mere 21.

Woods joked about lesbian sex and the endowments of black athletes – the kind of gaffe he never repeated once he signed with super-agent Mark Steinberg.

Golf blogger Joe Logan told Bissinger that Woods became the sphinx of the links after that.

“Tiger learned very well to talk forever and say nothing,” Logan said.

Woods even kept other golfers at arm’s length, “though he was always affable, never antagonistic,” wrote Bissinger.

As the magazine gets set to hit newsstands tomorrow, Elin Nordegren – Woods’ scorned spouse – has been celebrating her 30th birthday in the French Alps.

Although it has been widely reported that their marriage is on the rocks, new photos purportedly showing the Swedish siren wearing her wedding band sowed more confusion in the ever-evolving Tiger tale.

The problem is that Nordegren has an identical twin. She, too, wears a wedding ring. It could not be determined which sister was photographed with the bling.

Woods has been lying low since the scandal broke Thanksgiving weekend.

He has been dropped by major corporate sponsors AT&T and Accenture, but Electronic Arts Inc. said yesterday it will stand behind Woods for the release of a new online golf game, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour Online.”

EA Sports President Peter Moore said Woods is “still one of the greatest athletes in history” despite his “mistakes.”

Meanwhile, former Fox News anchor Brit Hume publicly urged Woods to seek forgiveness from Jesus.

“He’s said to be a Buddhist,” Hume said on “Fox News Sunday.” “I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith.”

Buddhist blogger Barbara O’Brien fired back.

“The practice of metta, loving kindness, is essential in Buddhism,” she wrote. “Metta is extended to all beings, including those who have wronged us – even Brit Hume – and also to ourselves.”
